In September 2013 Sandwich High School introduced an Introduction to Criminal Justice class. This idea stemmed from conversations between SHS teacher Laura Carlyle and SRO Christa Cabral. Approval for this course was given by School and Police administrators.
This semester long class studies the purpose, function and history of the agencies that comprise the U.S. Criminal justice system. The three major components of study are law enforcement, courts and corrections.
Many professional speakers visit the classroom as well as field trips to various locations. Professionals from all divisions of Sandwich Police, Police Detective Unit, Barnstable District Court, Children’s Cove, OTIS Air Force Base Simunitions Unit, Massachusetts State Police, private attorneys and a former convict speakers all assist students in expanding their knowledge and understanding of the laws that govern society. Current cases in the news are discussed as well as case law relevant to each topic. Constitutional law, use of force, police department structure, impact of crime in society and career planning are also covered.
Students who are interested in law enforcement as a career choice may also choose to attend a ride along with a Sandwich Police Officer. The class is limited to seniors only due to the high popularity of the course.
